Mental health conditions that may be eligible for insurance review
Coverage decisions are made solely by insurance providers. The examples below reflect common international insurance practices.
1. Acute mental health symptoms during travel
Many travel insurance policies cover new medical conditions arising during travel, including:
• Panic attacks or acute anxiety
• Sudden depressive symptoms
• Severe insomnia requiring medical treatment
When a physician determines that medical evaluation and treatment are clinically necessary, these visits may be reviewed as reimbursable medical expenses.
2. Worsening of pre-existing mental health conditions
Conditions such as:
• Depression
• Anxiety disorders
• Bipolar disorder
• Chronic insomnia
are often classified as pre-existing conditions.
However, some international insurance plans (particularly UK/EU policies) may cover worsening symptoms if the condition was declared in advance and stability requirements were met.
3. Jet lag and severe insomnia
While mild jet lag is common, symptoms may be reviewed as a medical condition when they:
• Are severe
• Interfere with work or daily functioning
• Require professional medical intervention
In such cases, treatment may fall under acute travel-related illness.
4. Lost or insufficient psychiatric medication
Some travel insurance plans include:
• Lost or stolen prescription medication under baggage coverage
• Medical consultations and re-prescription under medical expenses
Supporting documentation may be required by the insurer.
5. Trip interruption or cancellation due to mental health
Certain policies may reimburse flight or accommodation changes when:
• A physician certifies that mental health symptoms make continued travel medically inappropriate
Medical certificates are often essential for these claims.

Support for insurance documentation

Fees & international perspective
• All services are self-pay and not covered by Japanese public insurance.• Flat Travelers’ Clinic Package Fee: 88,000 JPY (consultation, documentation, and administrative support included).
While 88,000 JPY may appear high within the context of domestic Japanese healthcare, internationally, this fee is considered moderate and proportionate for:
• Same-day psychiatric assessment
• English-language documentation
• Insurance-ready medical certificates
For this reason, such fees are often viewed as reasonable medical expenses during international insurance reviews, although final decisions depend on individual policy terms.
Payments are accepted by credit card or cash.
What patients should confirm with their insurance
Insurance claims are submitted by the patient. Please confirm:
• Your insurance provider and policy number
• Coverage for:
• Mental health treatment
• Pre-existing conditions
• Lost medication
• Trip interruption or cancellation
• Required documents and claim deadlines
The clinic provides medical care and documentation only.
Final reimbursement decisions rest entirely with the insurer.
We recommend visiting if you
• Experience sudden anxiety, panic, or mood changes in Japan• Suffer from severe insomnia or jet lag
• Have a known mental health condition that worsens during travel
